Ch 2: #9 (10/11/12)

2. Priming refers to when subtle triggers influence our behavior without our awareness of such changes. An example of this occurs in Spain where authorities introduced classical music on the subway and after doing so, watched vandalism and littering drastically decrease. Can you think of situations when priming occurs?

  1. A situation where I have noticed priming occur the most is during the winter holidays. At home, my mom always has festive candles lit around the house, and the smell of the Christmas tree just seems to makes the mood of everyone at home, lighter and not so stressed out like it normally feels. I think that the smell of the candles symbolizes a happy and loving time of year. Although nothing else in the house has changed except for the smell, there is just a completely different kind of happiness in the atmosphere. I don’t think that the change in mood around the holidays is just limited to my house; just in general, I feel that around the holidays, people everywhere are kinder and more generous and may give more than they would at any other time of the year because they know Christmas or Chanukah, and many other joyous holidays are approaching. For example, most times of the year a person may not stop to donate a dollar to salvation army, but during the holidays I feel like I see a lot more people stop and take a couple extra dollars out of their wallet to donate.

  2. Somewhere where I think that priming may occur is when celebrities or people on a popular TV show dress a certain way, then the general public would start to buy clothes like that too. Since the people on the TV show or celebrities look good when they dress like that and look cool so people watching that show or looking at would want to look like that too. These people probably won't notice that they are changing their style.

  3. Priming occurs in many different situations in our daily lives and we often never realize it. It is done unconsciously. I agree with Chloe 100%. Once the end of November (Thanksgiving) and the entire month of December comes everyone often is in a more joyous and giving mood. I know that's how it is in my house. But another situation where priming can exist is often just by watching television commercials and even sitcoms. There can be a commercial for ice cream or soda that many people may often not eat or drink, however they will get a craving for it later on that day or within the next couple of days. This often happens with me and other people I know. Also, when you read a motivational quote or hear a song that puts you in a good mood, you often remain in that good mood for the days entirety. These are just a few examples of priming, however far more many exist.

  4. I feel like priming occurs in situations when people around you are acting a certain way, and subconsciously you start acting that way too. If everyone at my lunch table has a test last period and are discussing all the information and how nervous they are, then I start feeling anxious. I don't have a test, but because of their feelings I start feeling the same way. It is like feeding off of what others are feeling. This is an example I thought of for priming.

  5. Priming is when you act a certain way or perform certain tasks without even being conscious of them. An example is if someone gives a person decaf coffee and tells them that its caffeinated. They are more likely to act hyper or more awake, but really they haven't had any extra caffeine. Its just their mind playing tricks on them. Just like in the book, the people who were primed with polite words didn't interrupt the professor and the people who were primed with rude words eventually did interrupt the professor, a person who was told they were given caffeinated coffee will act accordingly

  6. A time when priming occurred in my life was when my family and I visited our cousins in Canada for a couple of weeks. They all speak French with each other, but English when they talk to us. By the end of the vacation, I had started to pick up on some of the French-Canadian nuances of their language, such as saying "eh?" instead of "huh?" I did not even realize that I had started imitating them because I had been so used to hearing them speak all the time. I probably subconsciously liked the way it sounded. I had no intention of picking up the stereotypical phrase, but once I was re-exposed to the English language as I know it, the “eh” was dropped just as easily.

  7. A time when priming occurs in my own life is just like the example above. My friend and I had heard if you listened to classical music, while chewing gum while you were studying you were guaranteed to do better. Although this may not be true, while I listen to the music I set in my mind that I will do better on the test or quiz. Listening to this music makes me think that I am retaining the information better and in some way making me smarter. This classical music may not actually be helping me retain information but I believe it is at the time, which in fact does help me study better than I would on a normal basis.

  8. Mainly I see priming occur when people drink caffeine. Senior year is stressful with college applications and we are bored doing the same routine for 4 years. So how do some of us solve our problems? Coffee! The days we drink coffee we are "energetic" the whole day and peppy. Reality is we are crashing at the end of the day, the caffeine high does not last us. Also the days we do not have coffee we seemed drained and moody, but if we ate breakfast we would be getting the same amount of energy and this energy would last us the whole day. It is all about the mindset and what we think is suppose to happen to our bodies, we simply act it out most of the time.

  9. I feel subconsciously priming occurs everyday in our regular lives. An example where I notice priming in my life would be when a random song comes on my iPod. After the song comes to an end I'' suddenly notice the change in my mood. Often my mood can go from 0-60 without me even noticing due to a song that I enjoy and builds my energy.

  10. A time when priming occurred in my life was when my family and I went to Disney World at the end of November. None of us were in the Christmas Spirit but once we arrived at the happiest place on earth seeing all the decorations and seeing everyone around us so happy, we instantly became in the holiday mood. I guess half of it was seeing spectacular decorations and lights got us in the mood, but also I feel that it was our minds just making us assume that we should be in the holiday spirits because we were at Disney world during Christmas time. It was so weird but nice at the same time. I think priming can occur in any situation in someone’s life.

  11. An example of priming that occurs in my daily life would be when I drink coffee. Those late nights I stay up to finish homework or continue studying makes me exhausted. Those nights, I instantaneously think of making coffee the next morning. After I drink the coffee I am prone to thinking that I am more awake and energetic. The placebo affect is in place here because the caffeine that is supposedly "giving" me energy. Another example could be when I am at dance. The substitute dance teacher I had tonight was very lively and enthusiastic in saying "if you mess up its okay". At this point, we were extremely tired. He told us that he wanted to see our personalities in the dance we were performing and not just the steps. That caused me to have so much confidence without him telling us to be confident. I ended up with a lot of success.

  12. I think priming occurs in our everyday lives. For example, when little kids get hurt by falling and they don't cry it means they are okay. Once they see what the fall has done to their bodies, they react. A little kid could be fine, but once they see the blood on their arm they will start hysterical crying. I think that this represents priming because the little kid is okay and feels fine, but seeing the result of the cut makes their mind think that they feel worse because out how it looks. Another situation when priming occurs is when you you know that you didn't get 8 hours of sleep so automatically you feel tired the next day.It is a known fact that teenagers are suppose to get 8 hours of sleep or more. When you know that you didn't get 8 hours of sleep, are you really tired? I think people make themselves even more tired because they know the amount of hours of sleep they got. If they got less than 8 hours of sleep they can make their bodies even more tired due to the fact of knowing they are lacking full amount of sleep.

  13. Ahh totally forgot :(

Priming occurs almost all the time when you really think about it. Most of the time you are being primed and you don't even realize/think it. Have you ever seen those bag of chips that says "I bet you can't have just one." In taking just one bite of a chip in that bag, you automatically want one more than you did before. It is the same with watching the Food Network. Seeing all the food being cooked or treats being baked, you tend to desire them more because you are now looking at it straight. It is crazy how many different examples of priming there are.

  14. IM SORRY I FORGOT!! ....Priming for me usually occurs when I go to workout at the gym for 45 min to an hour I have that mindsight after Im done that since I worked out I probably lost weight so now I can eat whatever I want no matter how unhealthy the foods I eat are and I wont gain any weight since I already worked out today. Even though going to the gym for an hour will not justify me eating junk food all throughout the rest of the day. Priming occurs all the time and we wont even realize it.

  15. In my opinion, there are many examples of priming in our world today. My example of priming is kind of similar to Gabby's. I know that when I eat junk food or candy, I always tell myself that I'm only going to eat one bite. However, once I start eating it I tell myself it's okay if I have another bite and so on, and I end up eating the entire thing, and I won't even realize it until the candy or junk food is finished.

  16. Just realized we had to do this :( !!!!

I have noticed priming in many different situations, for an example a placebo is a like a fake pill that you take to help cure a mental situation. This pill is isn't a real medication it just makes you think that you are on medication and tricks your mind to focusing and helping your disorder. There are also many situations where priming takes place when we don't realize it.

  17. Priming occurs in many things in our lives from advertising to architecture, room design and even colors all can affect our subconscious. Even something as simple as room design and colors can affect us. Hospitals, casinos and hotels purposely choose wall colors, carpet colors, and furniture that are all designed to put us at ease or get us excited to be there. In building today many entrance ways are designed to draw you in so you want to walk into. In advertising car manufactures would use just the right model in the car to make you want to buy that car. I believe priming is not a new phenomenon, I believe it has been used for hundreds of years probably not realizing what the technical aspect where but it was used none the less.
